Dear American Friends!
After World War II, milk powder from American care parcels helped me to survive as a baby.
Today, I am deeply embarrassed by the resentment and the ungratefulness that many of my German fellow countrymen show towards America, and by their unwillingness to make donations.
We German people have to be very thankful to Americans. The freedom we enjoy today, our security and our prosperity were assured to a great extent by America and its citizens.
The principles formulated by the fathers of the American Constitution are exemplary and ensure the values of our western communities.
I would like to apologize for those of my fellow countrymen, who do not recognize these connections.
Nonetheless, dear American friends, you should know that during these difficult days, weeks and months following a natural disaster, there still are people, in Germany too, who did not forget you and who will never forget you. Our sympathy and affection are with you and your country, and like you we hope that the long process of rebuilding will be
successful.

Ich konnte als Baby nach dem 2. Weltkrieg mit Milchpulver aus amerikanischen Carepaketen überleben.
Mich beschämen zutiefst die Ressentiments und die Undankbarkeit die viele meiner deutschen Landsleute gegenüber Amerika pflegen und der Mangel an Spendenbereitschaft.
Wir Deutschen haben den Amerikaner viel zu verdanken. Die Freiheit deren wir uns heute erfreuen, unsere Sicherheit und unser Wohlstand wurden und werden zu einem ganz überwiegenden Teil von Amerika und seinen Bürgern garantiert.
Die Werte die die Väter der amerikanischen Verfassung formuliert haben sind beispielhaft und garantieren unsere westliche Wertegemeinschaft.
Für diejenigen meiner Landsleute die diese Zusammenhänge nicht erkennen möchte ich mich entschuldigen.
In diesen schweren Tagen, Wochen und Monaten, den Folgen einer Naturkatastrophe, sollten Sie, liebe amerikanische Freunde, wissen, das es dennoch Menschen gibt, auch in Deutschland, die Sie nicht vergessen haben, die Sie nie vergessen werden. Wir begleiten Sie und ihr Land mit Sympathie und Zuneigung und hoffen mit Ihnen auf einen gelingenden
Wiederaufbau.
Die Hilfsbereitschaft der Behörden spiegelt nicht die mehrheitliche Meinung der Deutschen wider. Im Gegenteil: Mehr als die Hälfte der Bundesbürger will nicht für die "Katrina"-Opfer spenden. Eine polis-Umfrage im Auftrag der dpa ergab, dass 54 Prozent der Befragten die Betroffenen weder mit Geld oder anderen Sachmitteln unterstützen möchten.
Die Bilanz des Deutschen Roten Kreuzes fällt dementsprechend mager aus: Eine Woche nach einem Spendenaufruf habe man deutlich weniger Geld gesammelt als nach ähnlich großen Naturkatastrophen, wie DRK-Sprecher Fredrik Barkenhammar der Nachrichtenagentur dpa erklärte. Bis zum Freitag seien auf dem Spendenkonto 790.000 Euro eingegangen, nach der
Tsunami-Katastrophe in Südasien im Dezember vergangenen Jahres und auch nach dem Elbehochwasser 2002 hätten die Deutschen im gleichen Zeitraum bereits mehr als zehn Millionen Euro gespendet.
Auch die deutschen Hilfsorganisationen halten sich im Fall "Katrina" zurück: Dem Deutschen Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen (DZI) in Berlin zufolge haben von den fast 200 als seriös zertifizierten Organisationen nur vier zu Spenden für die USA aufgerufen. "Nach dem Tsunami hatten wir innerhalb der ersten zwei Wochen rund 30 Aufrufe", sagte
DZI-Geschäftsführer Burkhard Wilke.
Hauptursache für die Zurückhaltung ist Barkenhammar und Wilke zufolge der Wohlstand der Vereinigten Staaten. "Die USA sind eben kein Entwicklungsland", so Barkenhammar. Außerdem würden Berichte über Verfehlungen der Behörden und Plünderungen die Spendenbereitschaft verringern. Ressentiments seien jedoch fehl am Platze. "Die Not der Mutter in New
Orleans, die ihre Kinder verloren hat, ist genauso groß wie die Not der Mutter in Banda Aceh."
